Kanak Mani Dixit was born on January 27, 1956 in Lalitpur. He is a renowned Nepali intellectual, journalist, civic activist, social worker, and environmentalist.

As an intellectual journalist, he founded the bimonthly magazine Himal in 1987 which subsequently became Himal Southasian and also co-founded Himalmedia. As a civic activist, he played a prominent role in mobilizing Civic Society during the initial days of Jana-andolan III to bring back democracy to Nepal.

As a social worker, he founded Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Center (SIRC) at Dhulikhel, Nepal, the first of its kind in Nepal. And, he gave rebirth to the long defunct Sajha Yatayat in a new form – an eco-friendly sustainable business model.

As a culturalist, he founded Film South Asia (FSA), an annual film festival of documentary films from South Asia. Plus, he also has a key role in supporting popular Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF), an annual festival of mountain life documentaries from around the world.

Mr. Dixit studied at the Tri Chandra College in Kathmandu and obtained there his Bachelor of Arts in 1975. He studied at the University of Delhi, where he obtained a Bachelor of Laws. Afterwards he studied at the Columbia University, where he obtained two Master’s degrees, one in 1981 in International Relations and one year later one in Journalism. He worked for eight years from 1982 until 1990 at the secretariat of the United Nations in New York City. He was honored with a Prince Claus Award from the Netherlands in 2009.

He also owns a book keeping company where he is providing service to small business and personal financial needs such as tax preparation bookkeeping, payroll, CFO Service.

NASeA together with our partner organization ANMA has officially agreed to build the Model Village Project in Rainaskot village in Lamjung district of Nepal. As you are aware NASeA/ANMA joint convention 2015 held in High Point, North Carolina had made a historical commitment to raise the fund and “Help us to Rebuild Nepal! Save the Lost at Any Cost.”

We are pleased to share with you that this “NASeA-ANMA House” project in Lumjung will go a long way in reinforcing NASeA and ANMA’s decade-long true partnership and which will reflect our joint commitment to serve Nepali American community here in the US and back home in Nepal.

Dr. Keshab Paudel was born and raised in Nepal. He graduated from Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu Nepal in 2002. After his graduation from medical school, he worked for 3 years there prior coming to the US for his post-graduate training. He completed his Internal Medicine internship and residency from Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx New York. Then, he joined United Health Services Hospitals/ SUNY Upstate Binghamton in July 2010 as hospitalist physician. He was a teaching faculty for the residents and medical students there. He enjoyed the position of Core faculty of the residency program and Assistant professor of clinical medicine. While working as an academic hospitalist and member of the residency committee, he decided to pursue his MBA from University of Tennessee and completed in December 2013. In November 2013, Dr. Paudel assumed new role as a director of a hospital medicine program with Lovelace Health System/Hospital Physician Partners. He was promoted to an Associated System Medical Director in June 2014. In March of 2015, Dr. Paudel joined Concentra as an Area Medical Director.

He was heavily involved in social work since the early days in his life. He was the president of Junior Red Cross Committee while in the high school. He led free student union in various capacities while in Tribhuvan University. He was the president of Technical student forum in Nepal during the year 1998-2000. He was elected to the post of Central member of Nepal student union in 1999-2001. He had served on the board of America Nepal Medical foundation. He is currently an advisor of Blood donors of America. He serves as the President of Society of Hospital Medicine, New Mexico Chapter and Membership director of American College of Physician, New Mexico. He is currently the Fellow of American College of Physician and senior fellow of Hospital medicine.

Dr. Paudel was one of the advisors of the NRN NCC of USA in the year 2014-2015. Now, he is the elected President of NRN NCC USA 2015-2017.

He has done extensive research in the area of quality initiatives and process improvement. He chaired various hospital committees including but not limited to Pharmacy and therapeutics, Peer review, and Quality committee. He was awarded with best Medical Officer Award while at Tribhuvan University. He is married with 7 year old son. He is engaged in many voluntary social works, likes hiking and enjoys listening to music. He enjoys playing table tennis in his spare time.

Theme: Getting to know Sanjita Pradhan: Newly appointed Commissioner by President Obama to the President’s Advisory Commission for Asian and Pacific Islanders

A native of Nepal, Sanjita has worked with refugees and immigrants in Iowa for the last eight years in many different capacities. Sanjita was the Resettlement Director at Catholic Charities where she helped resettle and integrate thousands of refugees from Nepal, Iraq, Burma, Eritrean, Sudan, Liberia, Tunisia, Pakistan and many other countries.

Sanjita joined the Department of Human Rights, Office of Asian and Pacific Islander affairs in 2013 to explore looking at these system issues from a macro level and advocate for appropriate services for the underrepresented.

As the Executive Officer of the Office of Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs, Sanjita strives to be the voice of these many underrepresented refugees and immigrants who have high barriers such as language, transportation, cultural knowledge and ability to navigate the new system they are in. Having served them at the grass roots level and encountered numerous system issues, Sanjita’s goals are to find ways to bridge those gaps in existing services in our community, to enable our community become more welcoming and inclusive.

Sanjita’s role at the Department of Human Rights is to serve as the central permanent agency to advocate for Asian and Pacific Islanders (API) in the state, coordinate and cooperate with the efforts of the state departments and agencies to serve the needs of API persons in participating fully in the economic, social, and cultural life of the state, and to provide direct assistance to those who request it.

On May 8, 2015 Sanjita was appointed by President Obama to the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. In this role, Sanjita is expected to be the eyes and ears of the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities on the ground and provide input and feedback on policies and programs that affect the population. In this role she is also expected to help the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities to bridge the gap between federal government programs and help improve the quality of life of AAPI’s through increased participation in Federal programs. We, Nepalese community, take great pride in her nomination.

Dr. Arjun Karki is the new Ambassador of Nepal to the United States of America. He is a globally recognized personality in the area of international diplomacy, and also brings substantial expertise in running a non-governmental organization in Nepal. His detailed CV can be viewed at www.arjunkarki.org. His credentials are impeccable with over 20 years of experience in international relations, international diplomacy, international negotiations, conflict mediation, peace-building as well as development co-operation at the local, national, regional and global levels. He has undertaken the International Diplomacy and Leadership Training from Harvard Law School, USA; the International Diplomacy and Diplomatic Protocol Management Training from EUROPROTOCOL, UK and the International Negotiations: Practical Skills and Techniques Training Course from The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).

Dr. Karki held the position of International Co-ordinator of LDC Watch that is legally based in Brussels, Belgium with the international headquarters in Kathmandu, Nepal. He coordinated the organization and mobilization of the LDC Watch civil society policy advocacy and campaigns in the 48 UN-defined least developed countries (LDCs) in Africa, Caribbean and the Asia-Pacific. His work entailed well-established collaborative relationships with the UN system; the European Union viz. Council of Ministers, European Parliament, European Commission; the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD); the African Union (AU); the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and the Pacific Islands Forum.

Dr. Karki was actively engaged in Nepal’s democracy movement in 1990 having been rooted in student activism during the preceding Panchayat era. Throughout the Maoist conflict (1996-2006), he was intensively involved in conflict mediation, conflict transformation and in defending the development space as the President of NGO Federation of Nepal, the Regional Co-ordinator of the South Asia Alliance for Poverty Eradication (SAAPE) while also heading Rural Reconstruction Nepal (RRN). He played a noted role as a human rights defender at the national and international levels – especially at the United Nations (UN) and European Union (EU) – during the ‘direct royal regime’ in 2005 and subsequent second democracy movement or Jana Andolan II in April 2006.

Dr. Karki received his PhD in Development Studies from the University of East Anglia, UK and worked as an International Fellow at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), UK. He has extensively published in many reputed international journals and has served a reviewer for the Oxford University Press and SAGE Publications.

Theme: Life Lessons from a World Record Holder on Mt. Everest

Mr. Lakpa Tenzing Sherpa (a.k.a. Apa, also nicknamed “Super Sherpa), holds the world record for climbing Mount Everest successfully 21 times, and also a few unsuccessful attempts. He was born and raised in Thame, a village in the Everest region of Nepal. He got the first opportunity to climb Mt. Everest in 1990 at the age of 30 although he had worked with several expedition teams before that. He retired in 2011 to take care of his family and lives in Utah. Had he continued, he would have reached the peak many more times. Apa is an epitome of courage, endurance and dogged determination.

Apa runs a foundation called Apa Sherpa Foundation dedicated to enhance the livelihoods of Nepalese people, especially Sherpas who have limited employment opportunities other than climbing high altitude mountains. He has also worked with many others to raise awareness about climate change. He was a part of the team that brought down five tonnes of mountain trash that includes parts of a crashed helicopter, tin cans and climbing material. Unfortunately during this expedition, one of his friends and a fellow Sherpa, Lhakpa Nuru, was swept away in an avalanche on May 7, 2009, and died.

Apa also led the first expedition to complete the Great Himalaya Trail, a 1,700-kilometre (1,050-mile) trek spanning the entire length of the Nepalese Himalayas traversing some of the world’s most rugged landscapes 20 days before the stipulated time. He has kindly agreed to share his life experience in the NASeA conference call.
